Cyber Essentials questions
Do certificates have an expiry date?
Yes. Each certificate lasts 12 months, then you renew to stay certified.
How much does it cost to get Cyber Essentials certification?
The certification fee follows a tiered scale based on company size, using the standard micro, small, medium and large business definitions. On top of that flat fee, Intouch charges to run the whole process for you, priced on the size and complexity of your network. You get the full figure up front.
My organisation is not based in the UK. Can I still obtain Cyber Essentials certification?
Yes. Organisations outside the UK can certify too, and we handle the process the same way.
Do I have to obtain the first level of Cyber Essentials before going on to Cyber Essentials Plus?
You don't start with Plus, no. You pass the basic Cyber Essentials questionnaire first, because the Plus audit checks the answers you gave in it. Once you've got the basic certificate, you have 90 days to pass Cyber Essentials Plus.
What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?
Cyber Essentials basic is a 70-question self-assessment, independently verified, that confirms your security lines up with the framework. Cyber Essentials Plus goes further: we audit your systems with vulnerability tools to prove those controls actually hold up in practice.
How does Cyber Essentials compare to other certificates like ISO 27001?
Cyber Essentials sets a solid security baseline, but it doesn't go as deep as ISO 27001. It's a strong first step for businesses with no certification yet, turning good intentions into a recognised standard. Many of our clients earn Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, then move on to ISO 27001, which asks for far more procedural and technical controls than Cyber Essentials covers on its own.
How long does Cyber Essentials take?
Most businesses certify within 7 to 10 working days.
Do I need Cyber Essentials to win contracts?
Often, yes. Many government and enterprise buyers won't work with you without it.
