In June 2025, Microsoft introduced a range of transformative updates and enhancements across its key business offerings, including Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Azure, and the Power Platform. These changes underscore Microsoft's dedication to embedding advanced AI capabilities, optimising workflows, and bolstering security and scalability to empower organisations across the globe. Below is a clear and comprehensive summary of the key updates and innovations:
Security and Non-Security Updates for Office: Microsoft released both security and non-security updates for various Office products, including SharePoint Server (Subscription Edition, 2019, 2016), Office Online Server, and older Office suites (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word 2016). These updates help ensure that systems remain secure and up to date, and users are advised to install them promptly.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Enhancements:
o Image Generation: From July 2025, image generation in Microsoft 365 Copilot will be widely available, allowing users to create high-quality images within Microsoft 365 apps to enhance creativity and streamline workflows. A Copilot licence is required for full access, while some commercial users may have limited functionality without a licence.
o Copilot Tuning: Starting in June 2025, this feature will be available for customers with 5,000 or more Microsoft 365 Copilot licences. It enhances collaboration and productivity through multi-agent orchestration and advanced development tools.
Microsoft Teams update:
o Network Strength Indicator: A new tool has been introduced to monitor connection quality during meetings, addressing common support issues.
o Threaded Conversation Layout: A new layout for channel conversations is designed to improve the user experience.
o Screen Capture Protection: This feature prevents unauthorised screen captures during meetings by blacking out the meeting window, thereby enhancing security.
o Retirement of Classic Teams: Classic Teams will no longer be available from 1 July 2025, requiring users to upgrade to avoid disruptions.
Microsoft Lists Update: The Microsoft Lists mobile apps for iOS and Android will be discontinued. Users are encouraged to transition to the mobile browser experience. Key dates include in-app notifications in late June, the disabling of new installations by mid-September, and the complete removal of the apps from stores by mid-November 2025.
Outlook Changes: The Text Prediction feature in Outlook will be disabled by default from 1 July 2025 across New Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, and mobile apps. Users can manually re-enable it in settings. Additionally, Outlook will block two rarely used file types (.library-ms and .search-ms) for security reasons.
Retirement of SharePoint Alerts: SharePoint Alerts are being phased out to modernise notifications. Users are encouraged to transition to Power Automate or SharePoint Rules.
Dynamics 365 and Power Platform
Microsoft continues to enhance Dynamics 365 with AI-supported ERP and CRM solutions, particularly in the areas of retail, manufacturing, and customer service. Key updates include:
Intelligent Inventory Management and Demand Forecasting: AI-driven tools designed to improve efficiency in retail processes.
Data Standardisation: AI harmonises data from various sources, facilitating better decision-making in manufacturing.
Contact Centre AI Agents: Conversation AI and Knowledge AI enhance customer service by processing inquiries faster and reducing the workload for service teams.
Project for the Web Transition: Starting August 2025, Project for the Web and related apps within Microsoft Teams will be retired and redirected to Microsoft Planner, which will integrate premium features like Goals, Sprints, and AI-powered work management tools.
Security and Patch Tuesday
June 2025 Patch Tuesday: Microsoft addressed 66 vulnerabilities, including one actively exploited zero-day (CVE-2025-33053, a WebDAV flaw allowing remote code execution) and ten critical vulnerabilities, eight of which relate to remote code execution issues. A critical elevation of privilege vulnerability in Power Automate (CVE-2025-47966) has been fully mitigated.
Windows SMB Flaw: A flaw in Windows SMB (CVE-2025-33053) allows attackers to gain SYSTEM privileges over a network, which has been fixed as part of the June updates.
Other Updates
SQL Server 2025: Now available in public preview, with the current licensing model remaining unchanged. Reporting Services will not be included, as reporting will be consolidated into Power BI Report Server, effective until the retirement of SQL Server 2022 in January 2033.
Microsoft Lists Conditional Branching: New conditional branching in Microsoft Lists forms has been introduced to enhance functionality.
End of Support: Several products, including OneNote for Windows 10, will reach end of support on October 14, 2025, prompting users to switch to OneNote (M365) for continued updates and AI features like Copilot.
These updates reflect Microsoft’s ongoing focus on AI integration, security enhancements, and the modernisation of its business applications while supporting both cloud and on-premises deployments.
